Woodland Terrace

The last two weeks, Tyler Young, Ethan Westrate and I have been working on finishing our interviews and transitioning to laying the foundation for the upcoming senior prom in the spring of 2018. Last Tuesday, Tyler and I went to Woodland Terrace to show Caralee our first two interviews we had conducted, while Ethan stayed back to continue editing our last interview. Caralee enjoyed them immensely! Tyler and I went back on last Thursday to talk about what we needed to do to prepare for the senior prom. Our job is to look for potential donors who would like to help us put on the event. The picture below is an Excel document with all of last year's sponsors and the expenses that the group came across last year when preparing for the event. Also, Tyler and I helped Caralee peel off labels on tin cans so they could be used to deliver Christmas cookies to Woodland Terrace residents. This was an extremely tedious job believe it or not. This past Tuesday, Tyler, Ethan, and I went to Woodland Terrace, but Caralee forgot to tell us that the Woodland Terrace staff was moving items into their new assisted living and memory care building. Unfortunately, she said it would be better if we came back on Thursday to meet with her. Unfortunately, on Thursday, I came down with the stomach flu and was unable to go to Woodland Terrace with Ethan and Tyler. It is extremely exciting to have the game plan ready for the senior prom. It is going to be a fun process with several learning experiences along the way.

This week, Tyler Young and I went back to Woodland Terrace for another interview, while Ethan Westrate stayed back at the high school and continued to edit our previous interviews. This week we interviewed Duane and Janet Wahl, a Woodland Terrace couple that has been married for nearly 50 years. They shared a lot of interesting information with us. Janet revealed that her parents were first generation Americans with roots in Poland, Slovakia, and Hungary. Duane shared with us his life as a chemical engineer and how he chose to work in that field for 48 years. The interview and conversations Tyler and I had with them were very enriching and insightful, and we learned several new life principles from them. We also got to play with Sassy, their Pomeranian Shih Tzu Mix. Our experiences at Woodland Terrace have been incredible!
This week, Tyler Young, Ethan Westrate, and I went to Woodland Terrace for yet another interview. This week, we had the opportunity to interview Helen Smith, a one year resident of the assisted living community. Helen talked about the various stages of her life from her childhood in Cumberland, Kentucky to her current life as a cancer survivor. She says she thanks God everyday for her health and recovery from her illness. She also introduced us to her little seven-year-old dog named Harley. He was super friendly! Helen's interview was extremely enjoyable to conduct and listen to. It was another wonderful week at Woodland Terrace!
After three weeks without interviews and scheduling conflicts between residents and ourselves, Ethan, Tyler, and I finally got to interview one Woodland Terrace resident. John Bodenhamer was a character. John shared with us everything from his high school job of picking up dead bodies during the Great Depression to serving in the Marines during World War II to his advice for the youth of America. He even had questions prepared for us to answer! It was a very enjoyable experience, and Tyler, Ethan, and I learned a lot from John. Overall, it was a was a memorable and productive day at Woodland Terrace.
Even though it was a short week at school, our inter-generational videos project continued to march closer to completion. Tyler and I went to Woodland Terrace on Tuesday morning and interviewed Retha Baker, another resident at New Palestine's independent living complex. Ethan Westrate stayed back and worked on editing Joyce Arthur's interview that Tyler and I had completed two weeks prior. It was an incredible week and we learned several things about Retha, her life, and what advice she would give to the youth of America. It was a wonderful week in Advanced Business Management!
This week, Tyler and I completed an interview with Joyce Arthur, another resident at Woodland Terrace, while Ethan Westrate stayed back and worked on editing Bob and Pat Oakerton's interview from the prior week. Ethan has been doing an outstanding job with the video. Tyler and I have been reaching out to Caralee Griffith about other possible interviewees. It was been a busy, but exciting week. I am looking forward to what is in store for this coming week!
We did not pitch our ideas to school staff and administrators. However, we pitched our ideas to Caralee Griffith, the Director of Life Enrichment at Woodland Terrace. Our project proposal was to create an inter-generational video about the citizens of Woodland Terrace, and how they ended up in the exact same place. We would like to interview ten couples/people to make this video. We had several different ideas, from bringing dogs to an elementary school reading program to kissing a pig at a pink out football game. The Woodland Terrace idea seemed to be the most realistic and the most beneficial. It took lots and lots of brainstorming, communication, and compromise to pitch our idea and to eventually bring our idea into fruition. When it came time to present, we blew Caralee away with our proposal. This past week, we finished our first interview with Bob and Pat Oakerson, a married couple. It was an extremely enjoyable time, and we learned several truths about life and how life should be lived. We are looking forward to more interviews in the near future!
Currently, Tyler Young, Ethan Westrate, and I have been developing project ideas around Woodland Terrace, New Palestine's brand new assisted living neighborhood. We were wanting to interview some of the residents in order to make an inter-generational video that they can share with their families and give their families a glimpse of what life was for them. Additionally, we would like to put on a senior prom for the citizens in the spring of 2018. Tyler, Ethan, and I want to pursue these projects in order to make the citizens of Woodland Terrace feel more valued and appreciated by their new community.
